A good, deep clean of your house or apartment is a perfect way to welcome spring. The easiest way to organize yourself would be to focus on one room at a time. You can take a room each day or, if you’re really brave, you can check out this article on Oprah.com on how to schedule your spring cleaning all in one day!
But before you start your spring cleaning, you’ll want to make sure you have all of your cleaning products in stock.
This post is all about spring cleaning and includes a checklist that will keep you organized.
Spring Cleaning Checklist for the Bathroom
Out of all the rooms in your house, the bathroom is probably the one you clean the most. You’ll want to cover the basics first: wiping down the sink, toilet, mirror, and tub or shower. But in terms of spring cleaning, you can also go further.
Organize your linen closet
Throw away any old towels, or better yet, donate them to your local animal shelter. Many shelters gladly welcome donations of linens.
Organize your cabinets and drawers
Toss any expired make-up, medication, and cleaning supplies. If you’re tight on space, cabinet organizers can come in handy. Places like Target have many options depending on your needs.
Replace or wash your shower curtain and bath mat
Be sure to check the tag for how to wash these items. If your bath mat has rubber on the bottom, just remember it can’t go in the dryer. You could also use this spring cleaning as an excuse to try some new designs.
Wipe down cabinets, walls, and light fixtures
Grime can build up over time, especially with all the moisture in a bathroom. For the walls, you may want to vacuum them first (with the attachment, of course) to get rid of the dust before using an all-purpose cleaner which is safe for painted walls.
Don’t forget the floors
Mop your way out as you move on to the next room.

Declutter closets
Get out a trash bag and purge as your life depends on it! Ask yourself the following questions: When did I last wear or use this? Does it still fit me? Can I see myself wearing this in the next month? If the answer is no to any of these, do yourself a favor and donate it. If you’re someone who holds on to things forever, you may want to take a look at Marie Kondo’s best-selling book on decluttering to give yourself some inspiration.
Wash all bedding and curtains
Pro tip: you may need to take your comforter and curtains to the laundromat if your washer and dryer aren’t big enough. Make sure you have enough quarters.
Dust and wipe down all surfaces
This includes your blinds, windows, and walls. Also, don’t forget about your mirror. For tips on the best window-cleaning practices, check out this article from Good Housekeeping.
Rotate mattress
It’s important to rotate your mattress every once in a while so you don’t end up literally sleeping in a rut. You may need a friend to help you with this one, but it’s a good excuse for a little get-together.
Spring Cleaning for the Kitchen
Clean refrigerator and freezer
Do a thorough wipe down of your fridge and freezer – inside and out! Most refrigerators have removable shelves. Take them out and wash them with soap and water in your sink. This is a good opportunity to toss any expired food as well.
Degrease cooking appliances
This kitchen degreaser from Method is a popular and affordable choice to clean your over and any other appliance that might get splattered with grease.
Declutter and organize pantry and cabinets
This is pretty self-explanatory, and it’s another chance to throw away any expired food. The organization can be up to you based on personal preference or how much space you have to work with.
A great tip is to take pantry items out of their original packaging and instead put them in clear food storage bins like in this picture!
Wipe all surfaces and cabinets
You probably clean your counters often, but it’s easy to forget about the cabinets. Grease and grime build up over time, so spring cleaning is the perfect chance to wipe that dirt away.
Sanitize dishwasher and sink
There are many good methods on how to sanitize your dishwasher. Check out this article from Good Housekeeping, and pay special attention to the paragraph about giving your dishwasher a deep clean. They give some great options for DIY solutions as well as premade tablets you can find in a store.
Sweep, vacuum, and mop floors
It may seem like overkill, but each of these steps will ensure that your kitchen floor is thoroughly cleaned. Using a wet and dry Swiffer will save you time and cut down on the number of tools you need.
Living Room and Dining Room
Dust and wipe down all surfaces and electronics
Make sure to hit all the shelves and decorative items, including anything hanging on the walls. To save on waste, microfiber cloths are fantastic to use. Buy a bundle and once a few get dirty just throw them in the wash!
Clean sofa upholstery and curtains
I would suggest using an upholstery cleaner, especially if you have pets. There are plenty of great options on the market, but you’ll want to read the directions carefully before buying one to make sure you won’t damage the fabric. When in doubt, simply take the vacuum to your furniture to get any stray hairs and crumbs. Don’t forget to clean beneath the cushions! You may also want to move the couch so you can clean underneath as well.
Clean carpets
You could do a simple vacuum, but you may also want to give it a good shampoo. You can rent machines from your local hardware store and do it yourself, or you can seek out a professional. For those in apartments, check with your landlord first to make sure they’re okay with it. They may also have relationships with certain companies and can point you in the right direction.
